After a religious experience which led him to overcome his addictions to alcohol and heroin, St. John Coltrane stated: “During the year 1957, I experienced, by the grace of God, a spiritual awakening which was to lead me to a richer, fuller, more productive life. At that time, in gratitude, I humbly asked to be given the means and privilege to make others happy through music.”

The White Rose was a non-violent resistance group in Nazi Germany, consisting of a number of students from the University of Munich and their philosophy professor. The group became known for an anonymous leaflet campaign, lasting from June 1942 until February 1943, that called for active opposition to German dictator Adolf Hitler’s regime. The six core members of the group were arrested by the Gestapo and executed by beheading in 1943. The text of their sixth leaflet was smuggled out of Germany through Scandinavia to the UK, and in July 1943 copies of it were dropped over Germany by Allied planes, retitled “The Manifesto of the Students of Munich.” Today, the members of the White Rose are honored in Germany as amongst its greatest heroes, since they opposed the Third Reich in the face of almost certain death.

The Nazca Lines are a series of ancient geoglyphs located in the Nazca Desert in southern Peru dating back to between 400 and 650 AD. Hundreds are simple lines or geometric shapes; more than seventy are designs of animal, bird, fish or human figures. Many of the designs measure up to 279 meters and can only be fully recognized from an aerial view.
