Renée Jeanne Falconetti (July 21, 1892- December 12, 1946) was a French stage and film actress, notable for her role as Joan of Arc in Carl Theodore Dryer’s 1928 silent film, La Passion de Joan d’Arc.
Her portrayal of Joan of Arc in La Passion is widely considered one of the most astonishing performances ever committed to film, and it would remain her final cinematic role. Dreyer’s method’s of directing his actors, pushed Falconetti to emotional collapse.
*Opening scene: A captured Joan of Arc is tried for heresy (she claimed she saw visions and was the daughter of God) by an English backed Church-court. She is asked her name and age. She is then asked to testify that she has indeed had intimate communication with God (heresy).

“The supply, design and construction of batteries must be a core competency of GM,” Chairman and Chief Executive Rick Wagoner said at Detroit’s auto show.
The car world is stepping on the accelerator as it shifts away from the piston and toward the electron.
This week at Detroit’s auto show, nearly every major automaker, including General Motors Corp., Ford Motor Co. and Toyota Motor Corp., announced plans to develop more electric vehicles.
Because the battery is the most expensive and high-tech component in an electric car, the companies that make batteries well — rather than those that can most efficiently weld together steel frames — could emerge as the most powerful players in the industry. Batteries will become so crucial, that assuring they are produced in the U.S. will become a matter of national security.
GM will open its own 30,000-square-foot battery research center and enter a research partnership with the University of Michigan.
Toyota is ahead of the game. The automaker is betting heavily on its hybrid system, which runs partially on batteries, and has plans to incorporate the technology across its lineup in the near future.

The American atom bomb (known as “Fat Man”) being prepared for dropping on Nagasaki during World War II. Soviet spies gave its design to Moscow and Moscow in turn gave the secrets to Beijing. In time, China entrusted the design information to Pakistan. A.Q. Khan, Pakistan’s rogue atomic pioneer, then sold them on the global black market.
On August 9, 1945, Nagasaki was the target of the world’s second atomic bomb attack at 11:02 a.m. According to statistics found within Nagasaki Peace Park, the death toll from the atomic bombing totalled 73,884, as well as another 74,909 injured, and another several hundred thousand diseased and dying due to fallout and other illness caused by radiation.

Francis Crick, the Nobel Prize-winning father of modern genetics, was under the influence of LSD when he first deduced the double-helix structure of DNA nearly 50 years ago.
Crick…later told a fellow scientist that he often used small doses of LSD, then an experimental drug used in psychotherapy, to boost his powers of thought. He said it was LSD
that helped him to unravel the structure of DNA, the discovery that won him the Nobel Prize.
Crick was a devotee of novelist Aldous Huxley, whose cult accounts of mescaline and other psychoactive substances influenced an entire generation of hippies. In the late 60’s, Crick was a founding member of “SOMA”, a legalize-cannabis group named after the drug in Huxley’s novel “Brave New World”.
***Not only did Crick use LSD to gain deeper insight into DNA, but because of the complexity and infinite-elegance of the double-helix structure, Crick theorized that an extraterrestrial civilization originating in another star system may have “seeded” our planet with the essence of their live matter. He proposed the possibility that our origin may be found in frozen bacteria that this alien civilization “shot” from their planet, perhaps in an attempt to survive a cataclysm.

In an August 2006 interview Schiff generated much controversy when he repeated his long-held investment thesis: “The United States economy is like the Titanic and I am here with the lifeboat trying to get people to leave the ship …I see a real financial crisis coming for the United States.” He was bitterly criticized by colleagues and financial pundits for his unpopular views— all of which have since come true.
“…what [Americans] need to understand is: treasuries, CDS, bank accounts, bonds– all this wealth will be wiped out unless they act quickly to get out of U.S. dollars”…
This interview was filmed three days ago.

Tauba Auerbach’s work deals with the shortcomings and possibilities of language. Her work approaches language as a technology, a system of symbols by which the internal complexities of a person’s mind, body and general self are converted into an external, transmittable form. “I feel as though I know each letter intimately—its shortcomings and its tendencies. I feel close to them.” Overall, her work attempts to present a more complicated and flexible version of reality than language customarily allows.

Cocteau Twins* were an enigmatic Scottish post-punk/new-wave/”alternative” band active on the popular 4AD label from 1979 to 1997. Their sound was an ethereal combination of Robin Guthries’ effect drenched guitar melodies and Elizabeth Fraser’s deeply expressive and melismatic vocals.
* Jean Cocteau — after whom the band was named— was a French poet, novelist, dramatist, designer, boxing manager, playwright and filmmaker (5 July 1889 – 11 October 1963)..
Cocteau’s films, most of which he both wrote and directed, were particularly important in introducing Surrealism into French cinema and influenced to a certain degree the upcoming French New Wave genre.

Paul Revere Williams (February 18, 1894 – January 23, 1980) was an American architect. He based his practice largely in Los Angeles, and the Southern California area.
Known as an outstanding draftsman, he perfected the skill of rendering drawings “upside down.” This skill was developed so that his clients (who may have been uncomfortable sitting next to a “Black” architect) would see the drawings rendered right side up across the table from him.
Williams designed more than 2,000 private homes, most of which were in the Hollywood Hills and the Mid-Wilshire portion of Los Angeles (including his own home in the Mid-City, Los Angeles, California|Mid-City district).
His most famous homes were for Hollywood celebrities, and he was well regarded for his mastery of various architectural styles. Modern interpretations of Tudor-revival, French Chateau, Regency and Mediterranean were all within his vernacular.
His client list included Frank Sinatra (the notorious pushbutton house), Lon Chaney, Sr., Lucille Ball, Tyrone Power (two houses), Barbara Stanwyck, Bert Lahr, William S. Paley, Charles Cottrell, Will Hays, Zasu Pitts and Danny Thomas.
Noted public buildings that Williams designed or contributed to (in Los Angeles, unless otherwise noted) include:
* Beverly Hills Hotel, Beverly Hills, California
* Los Angeles County Courthouse
* Jet-Age Theme Building at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX)
* Saks Fifth Avenue, Beverly Hills, California

CNN: Russia Embracing Professor’s Idea that U.S. Will Break Up Into Pieces by 2010/—–000010101001010
“The dollar isn’t secured by anything,” Igor Panarin said in an interview transcribed by Russian newspaper Izvestia today. “The country’s foreign debt has grown like an avalanche; this is a pyramid, which has to collapse.”
Panarin said in the interview that the financial crisis will worsen, unemployment will rise and people will lose their savings — factors that will cause the country’s breakup.
“Dissatisfaction is growing, and it is only being held back at the moment by the elections, and the hope” that President- elect Barack Obama “can work miracles,” he said. “But when spring comes, it will be clear that there are no miracles.”
He predicted that the U.S. will break up into six (6) parts – the Pacific coast, with its growing Chinese population; the South, with its Hispanics; Texas, where independence movements are on the rise; the Atlantic coast, with its distinct and separate mentality; five of the poorer central states with their large Native American populations; and the northern states, where the influence from Canada is strong.
He even suggested that “we could claim Alaska – it was only granted on lease, after all.”
